Trauma can have long lasting effects on all aspects of your life, whether you remember the trauma or not. You might experience medical complications, physical symptoms such as tension or difficulty sleeping, and emotional symptoms such as anxiety, fearfulness, depression or shame. Treatment can prevent the onset or continuation of other problems.
EMDR therapy is a unique physiological therapy utilized to treat PTSD, stress, trauma, painful memories and negative beliefs. EMDR specifically targets traumas that have been “locked” in the brain, but can also be used for events that are not considered trauma in the traditional sense, such as ongoing teasing while in school, chronic childhood illness, etc.
Negative core beliefs are strong and long standing beliefs that an individual may struggle with internally. These include themes such as feelings of inadequacy, loss of control, lack of safety, or a sense of responsibility. Often an individual will recognize that these negative core beliefs are untrue and maladaptive but will find it difficult to feel differently. Working on negative core beliefs can be life changing.
Grief and loss can come in many forms. Sometimes we lose people and relationships through death, divorce, distance. Sometimes the losses are sudden and violent, other times they occur slowly over time. Sometimes our losses are very personal, like when we lose a job, our health, or an unrealized dream. The many facets of grief can be difficult to navigate alone.
Abuse in any form, physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal, is never warranted and its effects are felt long after the abuse has ended. But, even after something as grievous as abuse, hope for the future is possible. Overcoming the trauma of abuse can be scary. We provide a safe and confidential environment in which abuse survivors can express and process their feelings, thoughts, and fears.
Immediately after experiencing trauma, people can develop Acute Stress Disorder (ASD), which is a response to a traumatic event that occurs within one month of the event and includes dissociative reactions. ASD is highly predictive of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and when symptoms persist for more than one month, the diagnosis of PTSD is relevant.
Self-Esteem impacts all areas of life. When someone struggles with poor self-esteem, it impacts their ability to set healthy boundaries, achieve goals, and communicate their needs effectively. It can get in the way of forming new meaningful connections, keep someone stuck in an unhealthy relationship or work environment, or even lead to social isolation.
