Is This Relationship Abusive?

The following questions are meant as a tool to assist you in determining if a relationship can be considered abusive. This is in no way a clinical diagnosis.

  1. Your partner gets very jealous of your friends, your family, or time you spend away from them.

  2. Your partner discourages or stops you from spending time with friends, family members, or others.

  3. Your partner tells you that you never do anything right.

  4. Your partner insults, demeans, or shames you, especially in front of other people.

  5. Your partner prevents you from making your own decisions, including ones about school or work.

  6. Your partner controls all the finances, takes your money, or refuses to provide money for necessary expenses.

  7. Your partner destroys your belongings or your home.

  8. Your partner pressures you to have sex or perform sexual acts you’re not comfortable with.

  9. Your partner pressures you to use drugs or alcohol.

  10. Your partner threatens you verbally, through looks, or actions.

  11. Your partner utilizes weapons as a form of intimidation.

  12. Your partner threatens to harm or take away your children or pets.

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, it is possible that you are in an abusive relationship.

For help or more information on abuse, go to the National Domestic Violence Hotline or call or text 1.800.799.SAFE (7233)
